What You Can Do
If you work in the film, TV, or advertising industry,
sign our Great Apes Humane Pledge, promising
never to use great apes in your work.
Filmmakers who use apes in their productions are promoting a cruel
industry that forces baby animals to perform using "training" methods
such as electric shocks and beatings. Apes who are too old or ill
to perform are not even retired to sanctuaries-they are sold to tawdry
exotic animal exhibits or pseudo-sanctuaries where they will be caged
and neglected, ensuring suffering for the rest of their lives. Companies
that aim to entertain viewers need to know that consumers want cruelty-free
films, TV shows, and ads.
Here's what you can do to help:
- If you see a movie that uses live apes, walk out and tell the theater manager that you won't support the abuse of animals and that you'd like a refund.
- Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, warning others not to support films that use chimpanzees or orangutans.
- Write to your paper's theater critic to request that he or she include in reviews whether a film uses animals. Educate critics about the training methods and cruel treatment that animals endure in such productions.
- If you see a television show or commercial that uses a live animal, call or write your local network affiliate representatives to alert them to the objectionable content. Then, contact network headquarters.
- When you see a TV show that uses an ape, contact the show (check for feedback forms on the show's Web site) immediately to voice your concern.
- When you see a commercial or print advertisment that uses a chimpanzee or orangutan, you should also contact the company whose product or service is being promoted. Boycott the company's product or service and be sure to inform company officials that you will be doing so. If you're able to determine the name of the ad agency that created the commercial (this information is often available online), contact agency officials and ask that they establish a policy against using great apes in their work.
- If you see a TV show, commercial, or film that uses a chimpanzee or orangutan, let us know.
- If you ever witness abuse or neglect of great apes first-hand, please contact us.
- Visit our Action Alerts page—it's updated frequently.
Finally, spread the word! Tell everyone you know how cruelly the entertainment industry treats great apes. Many people remain silent about important issues because they are simply unaware. Help PETA help animals used in entertainment by contacting us so we can mobilize our activist network.
